a5c7b9f00b A Russian calling himself Orlov and claiming to be FSB walks into undercover CIA offices in Washington DC wanting to defect. He says that he has information on a Russian sleeper cell, whose members were trained since they were children. Their mission is to infiltrate the American system by being one of them, ultimately with the goal of bringing down the United States starting on a specified day - code "Day X" - which will begin with the assassination of the current Russian President in New York City at the upcoming funeral of the American Vice-President. The CIA interrogator deems Orlov a crackpot until he names the agent tasked with killing the Russian president: Evelyn Salt. The importance of this last piece of information is that Evelyn Salt is the CIA operative currently in the room with himhis CIA interrogator, her name which he does and should not know in the current context. Darryl Peabody with CIA counter-intelligence, who is monitoring the interrogation, feels he needs to question Evelyn before she leaves the buildinga matter of proper protocol. Evelyn, denying all accusations, decides instead to make a run for it, she states all in an effort to save her husband, German arachnologist Mike Krause, who she believes has been targetedpart of the Russian plot against her. Beyond love, her devotion to Mike is largely because he, before knowing of her worka CIA agent, helped negotiate her release from North Korean captivity two years earlier when she was in special ops in the field, that captivity which included torture. The longer Evelyn is on the run, the more she looks guilty to the American authorities pursuing her. Although helping Peabody and his team try to capture Evelyn, Ted Winter, her CIA colleague, is the only person seemingly who believes she is innocent of the accusations. There may be others in the Russian cell in positions of American authority who may be part of the plot if Orlov's story in the general sense is to be believed, they who may be trying to help or stop Evelyn, depending if she is truly part of the cell.
Two years ago, the CIA field agent Evelyn Salt is captured in North Korea and tortured. Her beloved husband and entomologist Mike Krause presses the US Government to make a swap and bring Salt back home. On the present days, the highly efficient Salt performs administrative work with her boss Ted Winter. When a Russian defector turns himself in to CIA, Salt is assigned to interrogate him. Out of the blue, the man accuses Salt of being a Russian agent in charge of killing the President of Russia during his visit to New York to attend the funeral of the American Vice-President. Salt claims that she is innocent and asks Ted to call her husband, but she is not successful in her attempt. Salt asks Ted to give protection to her husband but she decides to flee to seek out Mike. Ted does not believe she is a Russian spy but the Secret Agent Peabody orders his agents to capture Salt dead or alive.
All I wanted was something to chew my popcorn to and forget my day. Instead my intelligence was insulted and I left feeling ripped off.<br/><br/>There are some fine and thoughtful action movies out there - the Bourne trilogy represent three of them. Salt does not. Really… it is bad. You won't want it to be bad because SHE is in it, and because the trailer or poster sold it to you, or because you just spent $20 on it. But you'll know, deep down, the choice was wrong. You've been duped.<br/><br/>From the first scene to the end of the movie, I hoped in vain for something that seemed credible or edgy or innovative or even just interesting. This movie had none of that - you can guess the "baddie" without too much trouble, most of the characters are cardboard cut-outs, the action sequences aren't impressive, just dumb. <br/><br/>We all know why we went to see this movie - Angelina Jolie. If you've seen the trailer, and you've seen Ms Jolie before (Youtube for a fix), you really don't need to see this ridiculous straight-to-DVD if AJ wasn't in it. If the cinema had to refund viewers of bad movies, this "film" would gross about $55.
Look for them and you'll find the flaws but this spy thriller has Angeline Jolie showing how good an actress she is in keeping us guessing which side she is on. The acting is excellent throughout.<br/><br/>The opening scenes sets out the story the clearly for us with Evelyn Salt (Jolie) being tortured and then released in an exchange between the US and North Korea set up by her husband Mike. Pan forward two years and we find Ev and Mike in marital bliss when a Russian defector walks into Ev's CIA office out of the blue. Ev interviews him and within a few minutes everyone is asking who she is. A plot has been uncovered which suggests Ev is about to assassinate the Russian president. Whose side is she on? As in the "Changeling" Jolie plays a doubted woman exceedingly well, and there is some well crafted subtlety in this performance too,Ev tries very hard to contact her husband whilst the plot unfolds.<br/><br/>The set pieces are well executed, the plot twists cleverly worked, and even the predictable sometimes workingquite unpredictable. This isn't another "Bourne" movie but at times it does show similarities with the genre.<br/><br/>If you enjoy spy movies see this film. Eight out of ten.
Salt is aboutbelievablea secret training program for military pilots consisting entirely of kangaroos in flight helmets. But it must be said that the star carries her load admirably.
Shown on the big screen with a PG-13 rating—it was even cut for a 12A rating in the UK. The comparisons with both extended versions show that this version had to be cut due to regulations from the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), made obvious by frame cuts and toned down alternative footage. Also, the movie was trimmed and sped up a little,it is custom to make a later extended version an option. The theatrical version has an open ending and thus the possibility of a sequel.<br/><br/>Director's Cut:
